tasty morsels

"...young internet label Tasty Morsels are releasing their most ambitious project yet, a full length album by Column called 'A Year In Your Garden'. Column made their first appearance on the exquisite 'Tasty Morsels Vol. 1' compilation with their song Aerolove, and this album follows in a similar vein, an extremely understated, lax, psychedelic dream pop. Superb. The music, recording, and artwork were all handled by Rory and Jake McCarthy, between 2011 and 2012. The album is dedicated to the memory of Jake McCarthy."

this album was an unexpected gem. really, so good.

les yeux sans visage

eyes without a face (1960)

saw this last night and i think it's got to be one of my favorite horror films. i think a remake would be cool, but it would have to be in french.

and i can't really post this without billy.

connan mockasin

i'm going to preface this by saying that i just saw the hobbit and i'm still too giddy after seeing it to talk about it just yet and i want to see it a couple more times before i say anything more than simply this: IT WAS INCREDIBLE.

okay now onto a little band called connan mockasin.  it's front man, connan hosford, bassist ross walker and drummer seamus ebbs all hail from new zealand, so i thought it pretty fitting to talk about them whilst i'm still under the influence of tolkien fever.

i got hooked on this bad a few years ago with their song 'it's choade my dear' but never really listened to anything beyond that. after a while i did a bit of digging and bought their album forever dolphin love and wow. rocked my world.

they released an album this year called caramel and the songs that work REALLY work, and the songs that don't, REALLY don't. but all things considered that's not bad. i'll take it.

anyway, i just think this band is so cool and unique and they don't sound like anything else out there right now. i found tickets to see them live in january for dirt cheap and i'm really excited!

so give this band a listen and watch the music videos too. i'm telling you, everything about this band is art and i'm digging it.

//i'm the man, that will find you

some films

so i've been on a bit of a movie watching kick lately. i usually watch a new film about once a week (i really wish that wasn't the case but i just don't usually have the time). so as you can imagine, my list of must-see films is pretty extensive. but since my summer has started to slow down, i've caught up on my reading and have since been watching a lot of films. a couple days ago i found myself in a theatre watching riddick. i was a little surprised at myself for paying to see this kind of movie but i have to say it wasn't bad. or at least it was better than i expected. i really actually enjoyed pitch black and the chronicles of riddick but when i heard about the newest installment i couldn't help but roll my eyes a little bit. but like i said, it wasn't bad. a good dick flick chock full of bad dialogue and muscles.

that aside, there were a few movies that i saw recently that actually resonated.

first on the list:

prince avalanche (david gordon green)

quality green right here. witty, smart and subtle. i loved it. and it's also quite beautiful (i had no idea texas was so scenic). emile hirsch and paul rudd were hilarious together and they're honestly just cool guys that i would love to hang out with. the actual meat of the film, or rather, the situation their characters are in is so mundane yet it's something i've never seen before. repainting traffic lines. but it's just so full of...life. it's so off kilter and yet has an extremely dry sense of humor. definitely my kind of movie. and it's scored by explosions in the sky. can't really go wrong there.

next:

ain't them bodies saints (david lowery)

my feelings are a little mixed about this film. i really really really wanted to love it. it just fell short for me. rooney mara is one of my favorite actresses of today and i thought she was absolutely amazing. but casey affleck ruined it for me. we're supposed to root for his character, but i just found him extremely irritating. it had a very badlands sort of vibe to it and it was kind of an interesting snowball-of-events kind of story, but it just dragged on and on and casey just kept digging a deeper hole for himself. rooney mara definitely carried the film and she made it bearable but i just don't know where i stand on this one. 5/10.

next:

the spectacular now (james ponsoldt)

i can't even begin to explain how frustrated i am with this movie. to be frank, i hated it. i didn't get it. i have no idea how this piece of crap is getting such rave reviews. i just...i can't. i am beside myself. it was just so vapid and slow and it made absolutely no sense and every single character was infuriating. i keep questioning whether i saw the same movie as everyone else? because i think i did? and as much as the film beats you over the head with it's "coming-of-age" bullshit, it has a horrible horrible message for kids. which is you can literally be a deadbeat, alcoholic 16 year-old and get your sort-of girlfriend hit by a car and just completely ruin the lives of everyone around you with absolutely no consequences. yeah, awesome message. i just wanted to walk out of the theatre the entire time i was watching it. money well wasted.

and finally:

prisoners (denis villenueve)

one word. goosebumps. this film is just so crazy good. it's just the epitome of good crime thriller. every moment of this film is pure intensity and it's raw and gritty and dirty in all the right ways. hugh jackman and jake gyllenhaal were brilliant and i would be surprised if they aren't nominated for something. i know i will be thinking about this film for a long time and i honestly might go see it again. it's by far the most well acted film i've seen in a very long time and i think everything about this film was just beautifully done. absolutely fantastic.

post-beatles

this song makes me extremely sad.

it's all about the "good 'ol days" when the fab four were together and at the height of their success.

in my opinion, george is the best beatle. period. by this video alone, you get a taste of his personality and qualities as a musician and as a person. he liked to collaborate a lot with other musicians (in this video you can spy elton john and jeff lynne) and was very successful in doing so (check out traveling wilburys - dylan, orbison, petty and lynne).

john was kind of a dick (for obvious reasons) but an excellent songwriter and political and social activist. ringo wasn't great but i appreciate him as a person and his little hits like 'it don't come easy' and 'photograph.' paul is a great performer with i would say the largest following and probably the best talent overall but he refuses to tour with ringo and i think that's just stupid (but his new single is pretty good).

but george. he had that special something. the man was brilliant.
i have the utmost respect for him and the deepest connection with his music.

here are some good ones:

//a rare take of 'let it down'

//i live for you

//all things must pass

to a rare, beautiful and gentle soul. cheers, george.

book review: red earth and pouring rain

my friend recommended this book to me over a year ago, and i've had it ever since. i picked it up again recently and instantly fell in love with it. not at all what i was expecting but i was very pleasantly surprised. the novel is woven so deeply with layers and layers of character and plot development and every story is heavy with imagery and relatability. it's not a quick read. it's something you digest a while in between other books. but i definitely think it's worth checking out. it's great for slow nights and lazy afternoons.

august and everything after

i'm going to rehash this album again because it's august 1st.
GREAT ALBUM.
possibly my favorite album.
it's perfect for the creeping autumn and a long road trip.

caterpillar films

i love films that capture the beauty, ugliness and honesty of adolescence. whether it's angst or imagination, all of these films beautifully express what i look for in the genre of the child's perspective.

6. bridge to terabithia (2007)

5. ghost world (2001)

4. submarine (2010)

 3. where the wild things are (2009)

2. moonrise kingdom (2012)

1. beasts of the southern wild (2012)
